How to choose a skateboard for beginners

2022-05-24

Skateboard is a broad term, usually most people are used to calling longboards, double rockers, dragon boards, land surfboards, downhill boards, etc. as skateboards. In the skateboard circle, it is customary to call the double rocker a skateboard. The most popular is the dual rocker.
Components of a skateboard
Board surface: 1 piece
Bracket: 1 set of 2 (here refers to the installed)
Wheels: 4
Bearings: 8
Sandpaper: 1 sheet (attached to the side of the foot)
Hardware: Bridge Studs: 8 (screws to attach the deck to the bracket); Side Nuts: 4 (nuts that screw on the bracket to secure the wheel)
Note: If you buy the whole board, usually the merchant will install it for you. If you want to try the installation, you can ask the merchant to just give you the accessories and install it yourself.
The principle of the skateboard
It utilizes the motion theory and mechanics of the human body, and uses the body's waist, hips, foot twists and hand swings to drive forward.
The torsion of the human body will generate torque, and static friction will be generated between the wheel and the ground, so when the wheel rotates around the axis of rotation through the corner wheel, the horizontal component of the static friction force will be generated between the wheel and the ground, which will drive the skateboard forward.

Skateboards are suitable for crowds
Skateboarding is suitable for all kinds of people. Skateboarders are as young as 3 years old and as old as 60 years old. They all have relevant records of skateboarding. Usually suitable for all ages, mostly simple swipes. The mainboard players are concentrated in the age range of 6-30, with teenagers as the main force. Judging from major events in recent years (including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics), the age of elite skaters has begun to tend to be younger, especially some winners, who have started skateboarding from a very young age. For example, Olympic champions typically start skateboarding very early. Therefore, skateboarding is a sport suitable for men and women of all ages, but different people are suitable for different ways of playing.
Classification of skateboards
This is important, especially beginners must know. Skateboards are divided into toy boards and professional boards.
Toy Boards: Boards that are only suitable for simple gliding by quality. The board surface is thick, the elasticity is insufficient, it is easy to break, and the bridge wheel is relatively thin.
Pro Boards: Boards that are qualitatively suitable for all sports. From decks to bridges, wheels, bearings, sandpaper and more, all accessories are of high quality. The deck is light and flexible, with a comfortable foot feel. It is the first choice for playing action.

The difference between a toy board and a professional board:
1. Toy Skateboard
Material of the board: There are miscellaneous wood and Chinese maple wood. Weeds are of the worst quality.
Board type: the foot seat is not obvious, the warping of the head and tail is the same, regardless of the head and tail
Appearance characteristics: Because the wood used is not hard enough, it is relatively thick, and some have more than 8 layers, and the whole is relatively thick. Moreover, the edges and corners of the board are relatively clear, lack of polishing, poor paint, and insufficient gloss.
2. Professional Skateboard
Plate: Canadian maple, high hardness, good elasticity, need to be imported. Now many toy boards are also introduced with maple, but this is not the case. Only professional boards will use maple. The mineral grain of Canadian maple is relatively obvious, and the grain is very beautiful.
Professional boards are also divided into two types according to the different glues used. One is latex board and the other is epoxy board. The glue used for latex board is imported white latex, and the glue used for epoxy board is imported epoxy resin glue. Relatively speaking, epoxy glue has higher density and higher cost. Therefore, the general skateboard (the whole board) uses latex board; the veneer surface is generally epoxy board.
Board type: generally deep feet, the head and tail of the board are visually distinguishable.
Appearance characteristics: The board surface generally conforms to the characteristics of lightness, thinness and elasticity. The paint on the edge of the board is bright, the polishing is meticulous, and the radian is good. Generally, there are 7 layers.
Note: There are also products that use glass fiber as professional boards, which are currently niche products.

How to choose a skateboard
We can roughly divide it into two categories:
First, skateboard masters, most of the time they buy, they only choose the board surface, and they will not choose the set board. Due to the rapid wear and tear of the board, most of the axle wheels can be used for more than one year, and the replacement frequency is not high. If you choose to buy the axle wheel separately, please go back and assemble it yourself.
One is a beginner, who has less knowledge of the board, and it is easy to learn the unsuitable skateboard. It is recommended that beginners consider professional boards under the premise of budget, and do not choose too expensive configurations at the beginning. If you can continue to glide, there will be many opportunities to upgrade the configuration in the future. But for beginners, latex boards will suffice. In addition, beginners cannot distinguish the feeling of using latex board and epoxy board. It's like saying it doesn't make much sense to spend more money.
Where to buy a skateboard is guaranteed
1. Supermarket. The boards sold in supermarkets are generally toy boards, but they are expensive, so it is not recommended to go to offline supermarkets to buy boards.
2. Offline skateboard shop. Professional boards are usually available. The advantage of going to an offline skateboard store is that you can see the real thing and integrate into the skateboard circle as soon as possible; the disadvantage is that the choice of offline stores is limited and the price will be more expensive.
3. Online store. At present, there are many types of online stores, and the selection of online stores is very convenient. When choosing, you can first filter the price range, look at the nature of the store, and choose a guaranteed store. It is recommended to consider the brand flagship store.

How to learn skateboarding systematically
Skateboarding has to be learned in a planned way. Generally, beginners who want to learn skateboarding can consider taking professional training in offline skateboard shops and learn from coaches, and progress will be very fast. Moreover, now that skateboarding has entered the Olympic Games, many local governments are promoting skateboarding. If you really want to develop as an athlete, you have to learn from coaches from the very beginning, the sooner the better, starting in elementary school.
Teens and adults learning to skate can also go to offline skate shops to communicate and learn. You can also practice skateboarding instructional videos online. Start with the basics first, don't rush to practice the movements. If you can, join the local skateboard circle or school skateboard club as soon as possible, communicate and interact more, and progress will be very fast.
Note: It is recommended that beginners wear helmets and other equipment and take necessary protection.
Skateboard precautions
1. Beginners should try to wear protective equipment;
2. Try not to let the skateboard get rained, or slide in a place with water, which has a great impact on the board surface and bearings;
3. Check the equipment before each taxi, check the deck, bridge, wheels and bearings, and replace them in time if there is any problem;
4. Beginners should not slide on the road or try to rush, jump, etc.;
