Budgerigar Care Points

2022-05-10

People who pay attention to parrots must not be unfamiliar with budgerigars. They are very common parrots and can be seen in many birding homes. When many people see budgies for the first time, they may find that the budgies' calls are not pleasant, but this is not their "selling point". Their very beautiful feathers are the key to feeling good.
Although budgerigars are from Australia, they are common around the world for two main reasons:
1. Budgerigars are easy to raise and breed;
2. There are many varieties of budgies with bright feathers, and many people choose them as pets.
Under normal circumstances, budgies can live to be over 7 years old, and if they are properly cared for, they can live a lot longer.

Morphological characteristics of budgerigars:
Budgerigars are small breeds, usually around 17cm in length. Captive-bred budgerigars are slightly larger than those living in the natural environment, and because of their petite size, they are very cute, so they are loved by many people. Due to their small size, budgies do not weigh too much. Under normal circumstances, their weight remains around 35g.
There are 20 species of budgies, of which primitive species are the most common. The body of the primitive species is yellow-green, with thin black horizontal stripes on the head and back, like tiger stripes. Hence the budgerigar's name. Budgies have three green spots on their body - thorax, loin and abdomen. The central tail feathers are dark green and the other tail feathers are green.
Budgerigars have yellow feathers from under the beak to the neck, no stripes, blue-purple oval spots on the cheeks, and black sub-circular spots on the neck. Male and female budgies look similar, but we can tell their gender by the color of the wax film. Generally, the wax film of male birds is dark blue, blue or blue-white, while the wax film of female birds is flesh-colored or ginger yellow.
There are 20 species of budgerigars, the most common of which is the primitive species, some other species include grey-winged species, yellow/albino species, yellow-faced species, etc. Different species of budgies come in different shapes, which is another reason people love them.

Budgerigar living environment
Budgerigars seem to be very finicky animals. We all know that wild budgerigars are widespread in Australia, but some other countries have smaller numbers of wild budgerigars. Take budgerigars living in China as an example, they are basically kept in captivity, and a few budgerigars that fly out of their cages will also die due to problems such as being unable to adapt to the environment.
Look for budgies on farms, forests, bushes, or grasslands, where they are usually near a water source. In their natural environment, budgies like to travel in groups. Usually, there are dozens or even hundreds of birds in their flocks, and sometimes the number of their flocks may even reach tens of thousands, which can be described as a spectacular flock of birds. If startled, a flock of birds will fly away.
Budgies also forage in the wild for some time, first at dawn, when they go to drink, and then start foraging in the morning. The sun is brighter at noon, rests in the shade when the temperature warms up, and continues to hunt for food when the temperature drops in the afternoon. After dusk, the budgerigar returns to "home". Because budgerigars have a similar body color to their environment, they are not easy to spot while foraging.
Under artificial breeding conditions, the owner must first pay attention to the choice of cages. Metal cages are a better choice. Cages made of some other materials may be bitten by budgies. According to different seasons, breeders should appropriately change the feeding method, such as avoiding direct sunlight in summer and keeping warm in winter. Of course, in order to ensure that the budgerigar can live a healthy life, the owner still has a series of tasks to do, such as cleaning the cage in time and ensuring clean drinking water.

Budgie care points
Many people are attracted by their beautiful appearance when they see budgies for the first time. At the same time, because budgerigars are easier to keep than many parrots, and their breeding difficulty is not very high, many people choose them as pets. It's important to note, though, that if you want a talking parrot as a pet, budgerigars may not be the best choice, as they are not parrots with strong language abilities.
1. About the cage
In order to raise the budgerigar well, and even allow the budgerigar to reproduce, the breeder must not be careless in the maintenance process. First, the owner must provide a good living environment for the budgerigar. If you look closely, you'll see that almost all of the cages used to keep budgies are made of metal. This is because budgies love to bite, and cages such as bamboo cages are not suitable for keeping.
2. About temperature
When raising budgies, owners should always pay attention to changes in temperature. When the temperature is high in summer, the owner cannot let the birds stay in a closed room, and pay attention to ventilation. In addition, budgerigars are less able to tolerate direct sunlight, and owners should do a good job of protection. When the temperature is low, the owner must do a good job of keeping warm, otherwise the birds are likely to die because of the low temperature.
3. About diet
You can prepare your own food for the birds, or buy feed developed specifically for budgies, but no matter what kind of food you feed your birds, make sure the food is safe for the birds and provides them with the nutrients they need. You can also ask someone or an expert with extensive birding experience when preparing food.
4. About reproduction
Breeding budgies in captivity isn't particularly difficult, but owners shouldn't take it lightly. If you want the birds to breed smoothly, make sure that the birds are in a healthy state, prepare a nest box of the right size, and avoid scaring.

Points of parrot feeding
Feeding is a very important part of raising a budgie. A reasonable diet can ensure the health of the bird, while an improper diet can cause various problems for the bird. Wild budgerigars will eat many things, such as plant seeds, twigs, and even young leaves. So how do breeders prepare food for budgerigars in captivity?
For owners of homemade budgies, special attention should be paid to the nutritional content of the food, as this is related to the health of the budgie. If you don't know exactly how to prepare food for your budgerigar, don't give them anything you think is good for them. You can buy a parrot-specific feed, or seek help from someone in the industry.
In terms of diet, budgies also have their own little habits. For example, before you buy a parrot, the seller has been feeding them this kind of feed, and if you feed them another kind of feed, they may turn a blind eye; also, some birds will get food everywhere when they eat, but with proper training , the owner can help the bird change this habit.
In the process of raising budgies, there is one problem that may be overlooked: the problem of food storage. If the feed is not stored properly, it can lead to spoilage and mould. Birds eat such food, and naturally various problems arise. When the food is found to be damp and spoiled, it should stop feeding immediately and prepare new food again.
