Down jacket cleaning method

2022-04-29

Autumn is short and it starts to cool down quickly. I took out my down jacket and found that I forgot to wash it in the changing season. Cleaning is very troublesome, some stubborn stains, old mimeographs, mold growth, and it is particularly bulky after wet water, and it will be uneven after washing.
Dry cleaning and water washing are two different washing methods. Dry cleaning is to wash clothes with dry cleaning solvents, and water washing is to add detergent to water as a carrier for hand or machine washing. It doesn't get any better than this, just choose different washes for different types and materials of clothing.

Should down jackets be dry cleaned or washed?
Do a little experiment and you'll see.
Down soaking experiment
1. Remove two feathers from the feather duster, fold the feather stems in half, and check the feather toughness.
2. Put the two feathers in water and dry cleaning solvent respectively.
3. After standing for 12 hours, the feathers placed in water are still very elastic, while the stems of the feathers placed in the dry cleaning solvent are very hard and have poor elasticity.
4. After testing, it is found that after a long time of multiple dry cleaning, the down will be broken and cracked, which is equivalent to that the grass will be broken when it is dried.
From the experimental point of view, down jackets are not suitable for dry cleaning. In fact, every down jacket will have a wash mark, which has already told us the answer.

Down jackets are not suitable for dry cleaning
Dry cleaning a down jacket will wash off the natural oils on the surface of the down, making the feathers brittle, breaking, and losing their fluffy feel. On the contrary, washing with water will not happen.
The warmth of the down is mainly maintained by the fat of the down. Once the fat is removed, the down will lose its own thermal performance and reduce its service life. Therefore, under normal circumstances, down jackets are not suitable for dry cleaning, but only suitable for washing (some luxury brands have down jacket washing marks indicating that they need to be dry cleaned and cannot be washed, such as Burberry, Moncler, Prada).
Down jackets are not suitable for dry cleaning, why should they be sent to the laundry? Is it different from washing at home?
First of all, it is not recommended to use a household washing machine to wash down jackets. Improper washing can easily lead to accidents such as explosions. In addition, when the down jacket is worn outside, it will inevitably be stained with stubborn stains, oil stains, and pigments. It is difficult to clean at home. Moreover, there is no professional drying equipment in the family. The washed down can be dried, and the down is thoroughly dried. Back fluffy, good thermal performance. In general, there is no such equipment at home, and we can only restore fluffy down by tapping. However, improper force can easily cause the down to break or drill out of the gaps in the clothes, which affects the sealing and warmth of the clothes.

How to wash down jackets by hand:
Method 1: Before washing - prepare neutral detergent
Buy a bottle of down jacket special detergent, preferably neutral detergent, neutral detergent will cause the least damage to the fabric and down, and use an alkaline cleaner. If the rinsing is not clean, the residual detergent will cause damage to the down jacket, and it is easy to leave white marks on the surface of the clothes, which will affect the appearance.
If not, you can use washing powder instead, but be careful not to use too alkaline, otherwise the clothes will easily fade. The amount of washing powder should not be too much, and the residual washing powder will affect the bulkiness of the down. If you must use laundry detergent to wash down jackets, it is usually recommended to put 4 to 5 tablespoons of laundry detergent in two washbasins.
Method 2: Cleaning Process - Control the water temperature and clean with a soft brush.
The best water temperature for washing down jackets is 30℃-40℃, which cannot exceed the maximum water temperature indicated on the clothing label. Soak clothes for 10 minutes, then wash with a soft brush, do not rub with your hands. After washing, in order to neutralize the residual laundry detergent in the down jacket, you can drop a spoonful of white vinegar in the water, then soak the down jacket for 5-10 minutes, and rinse it off.
Method 3: Drying process - be careful not to wring out.
After washing, the down jacket must not be wrung out, but pressed down the water along the clothes, and then laid flat or hung to dry, not in the sun, but in a ventilated place to dry.
Method 4: Pat lightly after drying.
Lay the dried down jacket flat on the bed and tap the down jacket lightly with the hanger so that the down jacket will be fluffy and soft. Down jackets are machine washable, but throwing them in a top-loading washing machine is not recommended. In the traditional impression of many people, the cleaning of down jackets is the most troublesome. Because it cannot be thrown into the washing machine for cleaning, it can only be washed by hand or sent to the laundromat by your own efforts.

So why does the down jacket explode? Most explosions occurred during the drying process. There are three specific reasons:
1. Waterproof coatings block air, resulting in poor air permeability;
2. The interior space of the washing machine is limited. Clothes are too full, the down jacket absorbs water and expands, and the internal air increases. When drying at high speed, it cannot be quickly discharged, causing "explosion";
3. The washing machine is placed unbalanced. When the washing machine spins at high speed, the dehydration barrel collides violently from left to right due to a large amount of flowing water, resulting in an "explosion" phenomenon.
